Unfinished Revolution
As New Jersey gets ready to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026, you may want to consider: is the American Revolution ever really over?
That’s the question that the New Jersey Historical Commission is posing, at the center of their 2023 history conference, entitled “Unfinished Revolution: New Perspectives on the American Revolution in New Jersey,” a day-long event taking place on Friday, November 17, at the War Memorial in Trenton.
The program will feature keynote speaker Dr. Ned Blackhawk (Western Shoshone), Howard R. Lamar Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, who will present research from his latest publication, The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History, for which he has been named a 2023 National Book Award Finalist.
Concurrent panel sessions will present and explore other diverse perspectives, including Loyalist Interpretations, Reframing Revolutionary Women, and African American Experiences of the American Revolution. We’ll also review some under-researched documents from the State Archives that may spark ideas for future research. And some recent archaeological findings will illustrate the value of archaeology, both on the land and underwater, in interpreting the past.
Throughout the day, the Old Barracks Museum will be offering an Open House, and its interpreters will also offer a workshop on how to bring diverse stories into living history experiences using their exhibition Soldiers of Color as a case study.
It will be a thought-provoking day, with a world of different viewpoints and a whole lot more. Please join us, and offer your perspectives on the ongoing American Revolution!
