Molly Pitcher's Local Origins
Join the Friends of Millstone Township Historic Registered Properties as we mark the grand re-opening of the Clarksburg Cultural Center and kick off celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution! Bicentennial Reflection
Do You Remember the Bicentennial in 1976?
The Millville Historical Society does and looks forward to the 250th anniversary next year! Many commemoratives were produced leading up to the 1976 Bicentennial and the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
In 1975, reporter Gail Bronson wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “The buy-centennial has begun.”
The program highlights the preparations and celebrations of the Bicentennial, with a focus on Millville’s activities. More than 40 examples of Bicentennial Era Commemoratives will be displayed, and attendees will be encouraged to share their own memories and experiences. The Millville Historical Society is a Proud Partner of RevolutionNJ.
This insightful presentation is by Kathryn Saxton-Granato, Program Specialist with South Jersey Curations LLC, with funding from a grant from the Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission. The program will take place at 2:00 pm on April 26th at the Wood Mansion located at 821 Columbia Avenue. Prior to Kathryn’s presentation, the Millville Historical Society will hold its Annual Members Meeting at 1:30 pm.
Light refreshments will be served. Parking is behind the Mansion accessible from Church Street. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed.

Honoring Cudjo Banquante
Experience a powerful week of history, art, and culture as Newark honors Cudjo Banquante—enslaved African noble, Revolutionary War soldier, and the city’s first Black entrepreneur. From April 27 to May 4, events across the city will include a grand exhibit opening at The Newark Museum of Art, jazz at Bethany Baptist, a genealogy workshop, opera, films, and more.
Presented by a coalition of cultural, educational, and community organizations, this citywide celebration brings Banquante’s legacy to life through performances, exhibitions, and conversations for all ages.

Chwame Gischuch: Under the Shad Moon
Join the Bergen County Historical Society as they celebrate Chwame Gischuch: Under the Shad Moon.
At 2 pm in the state historic 1752 Steuben House join Teri Hislop tribal member and Clan Mother of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania who teaches the Southern Unami dialect of the Lenape Language as she gives a presentation about the surge in language revitalization projects as native people reclaim their cultures and traditions.
On display for viewing in the Steuben House will be Revolutionary War artifacts as well as Native American artifacts from the society’s extensive collection.
Primitive Technologist Steve Adams will be speaking throughout the day on The Material Culture of Prehistory. He will be demonstrating the use of stone tools and flint knapping as well as the working of plant fibers.
Stop by the Westervelt-Thomas Barn (weather permitting) to see a broom making demonstration and be sure to visit with the blacksmith on site to see what he is making.
Tour the Campbell-Christie House and visit the gift shop while you enjoy refreshments including donuts, cornbread, and lemonade throughout the day. Do not forget to visit the society’s authentic Jersey Dutch out-kitchen to see interpreters prepare a planked fish, three sisters succotash with maple syrup, and popcorn on a stick.
Activities for families include corn husk doll making (weather permitting) and the society’s QR Code cell phone-based scavenger hunt.
Ticket reservations are encouraged: $12 adults, $7 students, BCHS members free.
Free parking available on site or take the train to the “New Bridge Landing” station on the Pascack Valley Line.
Dogs are permitted on site on a leash but not in the houses.

1759 Vought House: A Loyalist Homestead in Revolutionary Hunterdon County
This free lecture will cover the fascinating story of the Vought family from their arrival in the colony of New Jersey in 1710 through their activities during the American Revolution and their fate after the war. We'll also delve into some of our recent restoration projects and findings from an archaeological investigation in the cellar of the building. The Vought House, built in 1759 by Christoffel Vought, is on the National Register of Historic Places for its connection to events of the American Revolution and its architectural significance.

Battle of Monmouth Reenactment
Each year the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield co-sponsors, with the DEP, State of New Jersey, an annual reenactment of the battle. Hundreds of troops encamp at the park and recreate scenarios of the battle over the weekend. There are also numerous presentations and lectures, tours of the camps, and sutler area open to the public. A suggested donation of $10.00 per car is requested to help cover the cost of the event. A food vendor will be on site and handicapped parking is available.
Bring your family and travel back in time to the 1770s. Two armies will be preparing to do battle. Continental Army soldiers retrained at Valley Forge are itching to show off their new skills, while a British-German-Loyalist Army hopes to crush the rebels and restore good government. The army encampments will welcome visitors beginning at 9 AM. Watch soldiers clean their muskets while their women prepare what may be their men’s last meal. Some officers may be drilling their men while others plan for the battle and others play cards. If someone is accused of cheating, there may be a duel.

Women's Equality Day Festival

New Jersey Privateers and the American Revolution
The Fortnightly Club of Summit, which owns historic Twin Maples, received a HEART grant from Union County for an event on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025 titled, New Jersey Privateers and the American Revolution.
The event includes a discussion of the role of Privateers played in running the British blockade. It will feature the New Jersey SeaDogs, a musical group, singing sea shanties of the Colonial period and an exhibition of artifacts related to the Privateers. There will be re-enactors participating.
There will be a presentation at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on August 15 for a minimal amount to support the preservation of Twin Maples, built in 1908 in the Colonial Revival style resembling the White House.
The Club will be hosting a Colonial Tavern night featuring the Regimental Brewmaster and the Ministers of Apollo (music and dance), after the event.


Homecoming 250
Homecoming 250 proudly presents the Navy and Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary celebration, kicking off in Fall 2025 as the grand opening of America’s semiquincentennial. Taking place in Philadelphia, Camden, and along the Delaware River, this historic event will be the nation’s largest tribute to the military and Veterans—honoring two legendary branches born in Philadelphia in 1775.



Nursery of Rebellion
Drawing on an array of Princeton University Library’s manuscript and rare book collections, this exhibition will commemorate the 250th anniversaries of U.S. independence and the Battle of Princeton, and showcase Princeton’s archival treasures from the revolutionary era alongside documents and artifacts that reveal local experiences of the American Revolution on campus and in the surrounding communities. Exploring the Revolution across lines of gender, class, race, allegiance, and status, the exhibition will offer visitors a range of perspectives on the Revolution’s ideals and contradictions, its anxiety and violence, and its achievements and tragedies.
Curated by Michael Blaakman, Associate Professor of History, and Gabriel Swift, Librarian for Early American Collections.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition between 10:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. on weekdays, and between 11:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. on Saturdays and Sundays.

National Flag Foundation: Light to Unite
The National Flag Foundation asks all American cities, to the extent possible, to light red, white, and blue as a national evening of unity to celebrate our nation's 250th Birthday. The NFF also seeks to unify our country in these historically divisive times by asking all Americans to fly an American Flag on July 4, 2026.

Two Lights at the Trent House
Join the Trent House Association in honoring the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s legendary ride on Friday, April 18, 2025. The evening begins at 7:30 PM with a welcoming reception at the historic William Trent House, 15 Market Street, Trenton, NJ. At 8:00 PM, lanterns will be lit in the house’s cupola, echoing the signal that sparked the American Revolution.
Guests can enjoy light refreshments, brief remarks, and receive a free set of collectible cards featuring stories of 22 diverse Trenton residents from the Revolutionary era. The William Trent House is a National Historic Landmark and part of multiple heritage trails, reflecting its deep Revolutionary War history.
Free parking is available behind the house off William Trent Place. All are welcome!
